Kanlungan is a memorial of my past. This particular series is composed of oil paintings on paper depicting specific objects and structures from my childhood back in the Philippines. Each painting explores a nostalgic subject that played an important role in making my childhood fun and memorable, while invoking the feeling of home. This installation connects me to what defined home for me back then through a mix of personal symbolisms and Filipino traditions. Green becomes a unifying and dominant color in the paintings referencing the Philippines tropical country and lush green landscapes. The plain green backgrounds emphasize the subjects as carefully selected snapshots of my memories while the Ice cream represents a comforting end. Its melting property represents the passing of time and has become an object of personal symbolism throughout my work.
